Moate railway station is on the old Mullingar to Athlone link line that has been closed to passenger traffic since 1987 although freight trains continued to use this line until about 1990. The track is still in place along the entire route but is now totally unusable. Moate station is complete with station house, locomotive shed, platform shelter, signal box and water tank. The station opened in 1851 to serve the Midland Great Western Railway (MGWR) line from Dublin to Galway and County Mayo. In 1973, the route and services to Galway were transferred to the southern mainline with trains leaving Heuston (Dublin) and travelling via Portarlington instead of Mullingar.
As of 2015, the line and station at Moate form part of the Athlone to Mullingar Cycleway.
Moate station served as Ashford Station in the movie The First Great Train Robbery (1979).
