26 April 1986 - The World's Worst Nuclear Power Plant Disaster

Thirty three years to the day the world’s worst nuclear power plant disaster happened. The Chernobyl accident is considered the most disastrous nuclear power plant accident in history, both in terms of cost and casualties. It is one of only two nuclear energy accidents classified as a level 7 event (the maximum classification) on the International Nuclear Event Scale, the other being the Fukushima disaster in Japan in 2011.  The struggle to safeguard against scenarios that were perceived  as having the potential for greater catastrophe, together with later decontamination efforts of the surroundings, ultimately involved over 500,000 workers (called liquidators) and cost an estimated 18 billion rubles.

This was from my two visits, once in 2015 and again in 2016, and I also visited inside the Powerplant (2015 trip) even up to the wall of reactor 4, (middle picture) which was at least a metre thick in concrete and still the geiger was sounding off, it shows the memorial of one of the men that was killed instantly when the reactor exploded. The last picture shows the inside of reactor control room 2 which is identical to the destroyed control room 4.
